Hakuoki’s English box art. Looks pretty awesome, right?
Okay, continuing on with Hakuoki Awareness Week, let’s have a talk about what Hakuoki selling well means for YOU.
Since there is no precedent for otome games in the West, Hakuoki is pretty much…doing its own thing. The only similar games we’ve had are Yo-Jin-Bo, which was an obscure PC release, and Princess Debut, a DS game aimed at a totally different age group. So, if Hakuoki does well, what does this mean?
-Aksys, and similar companies like XSEED will see these sales and want in on the deal, and continue to release not only otome titles, but more visual novels in general. This would pave the way for titles such as Amnesia, Amnesia Later, Clock Zero, Storm Lover, Love Revo, Beyond the Future, and others.
-If Aksys has two sleeper hits in a row with 999, then this, they may localize more visual novels. The 999 sequel, Good People Die, will be in our grasp, perhaps. Also, you Umineko fans?? What if they realize visual novels do well? Does this not help your cause?
-JAST will be more motivated to grab the Starry Sky license they’ve been “Considering.” This will also help motivate them to shell out the money for the voice track.
-This helps prove that the PSP is -not- a dead system, and thus, we will see more PSP games released before the Vita, and during the Vita’s life span [perhaps as digital titles.]
-Hakuoki is a franchise, so this means we could get the DS/3DS or PS3 versions, if it does well.
-You’re sending a message to an industry afraid to deviate from “what works” [ie: FPS games with lots of DLC, other forms of shooter, and motion control dance games] that localizing these niche titles IS worth their time. While shooters, dance games, and minigame collections are fun, you can’t play just that forever. How about showing the industry the OTHER games we like to play? :]
Clearly, lots of good stuff. So, before you brush Hakuoki off, think about all the help you could be giving fans of these sorts of games. Even if Hakuoki ISN’T your otoge-cup-of-tea [I, for one, knew nothing of the game before this] just take a chance. :] It means games more up your alley CAN come here.
This last Hakuoki post of mine honestly got such a huge audience I don’t even understand it. So please keep spreading the word, so we can make this game into -the- sleeper-hit of 2012~ Support the localization of visual novels, otome games, and niche titles!!](http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lyxhwzflla1r2fy73o1_250.jpg)
